a good assumption question.

Although there has been great scientific debate for decades over global warming, most scientists now agree that human activity is causing the Earth's temperature to rise. Though predictions vary, many global warming experts believe that average global temperatures will rise between three and eight degrees Fahrenheit during the next century. Such an increase would cause an alarming rise in sea levels, displacing millions of people by destroying major population centers along the world's coastlines.

Which of the following is an assumption in support of the argument's conclusion?

A] New technological developments in the next century will not divert rising seas from the world's coastal cities.

B] Individuals will not become more aware of the steps they can take to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

C] Rising sea levels similarly affect all coastal population centers.

D] Some global warming experts predict a greater than eight degree Fahrenheit increase in global temperatures during the next century.

E] Human activity is the sole cause of increasing global temperatures.
The given OA is A.
I came down to options A and E and chose E as the answer choice.
If you identify the premise and the conclusion carefully, then you will find that the premise and the sub-premise are included in the sentence.

Premise: Human Activity is causing the earth's tempreature to rise.

Sub-Premise: Increase in tempreatures, would cause in alarming rise in sea levels.

Conclusion: Rise in sea levels would destroy millions of people by displacing them.

Option A directly connects to the conclusion.

Option E basically strengthens the passage from human activity to earth's tempreature to rise.

Human Activity is the sole cause of increasing the earth's tempreature.

But yes using the negation test here does not affect the conclusion.

According to the negation test, Human activity is not the sole cause of increasing the earth's tempreatures.

This means that the answer choice A is the correct answer choice.

Using the negation test is the ultimate weapon that we have to tackle the assumption type questions.

Amit,

Most of your questions are really good & excellent, but we are not able to solve your difficult q's and hone our skills becoz you are posting the excellent reasoning and answer to your discussion. One way we are gaining knowledge, but we do need to practice more in this forum too.

It will be really great if you could post the reasoning and OA atleast couple of threads later. It will be really beneficial for everyone.

Thank you,
Karthik
