Revised IMO A

we need first "that" to introduce a clause.

That eliminates D and E

B-"giving" is akward

C- "There was an .."

Importance of second "that"

In Zoo, there could be many elephants just for kids to have a look at

This one specifically gives a ride and hence needs to be restricted.

I completely overlooked "that" in earlier anaylis and could not reply earlier

Hope this gives you 2 cents

D

The clause "Noted as a example" should take Direct object -The elephant

I think ''Noted as a example'' should take ''that''

aren't we introducing a new clause here?

moreover Ms. Wootton noted........ that the elephant

and not

Ms Wootton noted..... the elephant

example: The police officer noted the number on the number plate was forged.

The police officer noted that the number on the number plate was forged.

I think the latter sounds better, doesn't it?

imo C

IMO A

In C,D and E you don't need 'and' to separate the sentences. And makes it sound as if Barbera Wootton is telling two things
A) that there was an elephant who used to give rides and B) that the elephant used to earn exactly what she was earning.
Plus in D 'was earning annually exactly what she then earned as director of adult education for London' is not an independent clause.
Same for E that it earned....is not an independent clause.

So we come down to B and A.

In B giving is incorrect, since we don't know if the elephant is still giving rides, plus shes quoting an incident from the past, so the use of simple past tense (gave) is fine

IMO A.

mals24 - my concern regarding A is the comparison between ''was earning'' and ''earned''.

rohan

i think that part of A is fine, because the elephant is still earning vs. Wooton who stopped earning that amount in the past. I would ideally like to have 'had been' in the last non-underlined part......

why do we need an independant clause in D and E?
I didn't understand your reasoning for eliminating D and E
Can you please elaborate more ?

The use of past continuous tense is fine in option A

Past continuous tense is used to describe an action going on at some time in the past . The time of the action may or may not be stated.

The elephant when he gave rides to the children in past was earning money while he gave the rides. So the earning was an ongoing action while the elephant was giving rides.

D and E can be eliminated for the reason that "introductory clause" needs to be introduced by "That"

Second "that" in A acts as a restrictive modifer..

Can anybody explain qhat is wrong with giving in B?

I thought that "giving........zoo" is a participal phrase describing the elephant, Also verb form " had been earning" is fine as the action started in the past and continued for sometime.

Please explain. Thanks

"giving...zoo" is used as a non-restrictive description for elephant

This means, if you remove the statement, meanimg shouldnt change

Do it and you will come to see why B is wrong

secondly, Is there only one elephant in the zoo?

Cant there be elephants just for sight seeing in the zoo...hence we need to restrict the description of elephant with a restrictive clause...that

2 "Thats" have 2 purposes

1. First that introduces the introductory clause

2. That as a restrictive modifer to describe elephant

Should you have any further questions, let us know
