Hello,

This is my first essay, it took me an hour, I'm trying to find my 'voice' :-) Would you please rate this essay? To be honest, I'm not even sure if I stayed on the point or not....

Thanks in advance.

“Corporations and other businesses should try to eliminate the many ranks and salary grades that classify employees according to their experience and expertise. A ‘flat’ organizational structure is more likely to encourage collegiality and cooperation among employees.”

The speaker asserts that corporations and businesses should eliminate the many ranks and salary grades that classify employees according to their experience and expertise in order to achieve a flat organization and in turn boost cooperation among employees. I find myself in agreement with the speaker's assertion for three reasons.

Firstly, the key to cooperation among employees is clear and frank communication. Flat organizations inherently don't have as many communication barriers as hierarchical organizations, and therefore the staff can easily communicate and cooperate. For example, technology companies such as Google, take advantage of a flat organizational structure to encourages team work and boost productivity.

Secondly, in flat organizations because of cooperation between the employees the gap between the levels of employee experience and expertise shrinks more quickly. Due to direct interaction between the more experienced employees and their counterparts; the more experienced employees learn new skills and new ways of approaching problems and the less experienced employees learn the business issues more quickly by taking advantage of their counterpart's experience.

Thirdly, in flat organizations the staff is included in the decision making process, allowing them to share the same vision, goal and belief system, which in turn boosts cooperation. This sharing of vision and acting as one cooperative entity allows the organization to react in a more agile and flexible manner to challenges. Some may argue that larger organizations require a hierarchical structure in order to be productive and retain their senior work force; however in recent years even large organizations have strived to streamline their processes and reporting structures in order to increase cooperation among their staff.

In conclusion, business entities that have a flat structure can take advantage of increased cooperation among their employees and be more productive and agile. And in turn their employees can take advantage of the flat structure to participate in the decision making processes and to learn from one another. Organizations with artificial hierarchies based on experience and expertise will not be able to take advantage of a cooperative environment unless they flatten their structure.
