Although and even though---difference

How to differ between although and even though in terms of usage? Is the difference context based or they can be interchangeably used.

Although vs Though vs Even though

Although - linking word - expresses the idea of contrast.

e.g - Although Amit has a car, he doesn't often drive it.

The clause with although can come at the end.

e.g - Although the cafe was crowded, we found a table. OR We found a table, although the cafe was crowded.

Though - is informal. It means the same as although.

e.g - Though / Although I liked the sweater, I decided not to buy it.

We can use though at the end of a sentence.

e.g - I liked the sweater. I decided not to buy it, though.

Even though - is stronger, more emphatic than although.

e.g -

1). Ram looked quite fresh, even though he'd been playing cricket.

2). Even though you dislike Sanya, you should try to be nice to her.

Note - We can use in spite of the fact (that) in the same way as although.

e.g -

I'm no better, although I've taken the pills.

OR

I'm no better in spite of the fact that I've taken pills.

Quick Tip only for GMAT -- Applicable most of the times but not always ...

Even though -- when the condition given is negative but the outcome/result is positive

eg -- Even though Ram hadn't studied, he passed the exam.

Although -- when the condition given is positive but the outcome/result is negative

eg -- Although Ram had studied very hard, he did not score well.

So, you see Although/ Though are interchangeable But Even though is context based. Remember, Although can not come at the end of the sentence like Though.

Thanx a million Atul.

This is the best explaination that can be given in this context.( Although I am talking in superlative degree, I don't mean to violate GMAT standards.)

One more Query: Can you suggest some standard sources to practice SC from apart from OG, OG Verbal and Manhattan?

Hi,

Thanks for the appreciation. I posted the concepts from the this website.

Check this out, its a good blog spot and here you will find good concepts. I usually refer this blogspot so when saw your question thought to share the same.

For practice, m sorry, i not using as such the standard sources, i'm actually using the question bank apart from the sources you mentioned. That question bank contains all the best possible questions taken from all the best standard resources and designed by a trusted guy (sandeep gupta- GMAT faculty scored perfect 800 in 2008)...earlier his material was available for free on internet but now the links are removed.

Thanks

Dear Atul,

Would it be possible for you to share the question with me.
I want to attempt questions from a good source like Mr Sandeep.
This would be of great help to me.

Cheers,
Rohan.
