A question in OG

by wlwl0623 » Fri Jul 03, 2009 4:35 pm
Do the 2 sentences following have the same meaning, and why?
And please point the mistakes out in the 2 sentences if there are some.

Although the consumption of no particular foods has been proved to reverse hardening of the arteries, studies indicate that to refrain from eating certain foods could help reverse blockage of coronary arteries, the blood vessels that feed the heart.

Although it has not been proved that the consumption of any particular food will reverse hardening of the arteries, studies indicate that refraining from eating certain foods could help reverse blockage of coronary arteries, the blood vessels that feed the heart.

Thanks a million times.

I have corrected some grammar mistakes in the original choices, so the only problem remains to be whether the two sentences I gave have the same meaning.

I'll appreciate it so much if you can help me with it.

Since it may help you solve my problem, here's original quesion with choices below.

Despite no proof that the consumption of any particular foods reverse hardening of the arteries, studies indicate that refraining from eating certain foods could help reverse blockage of coronary arteries, the blood vessels that feed the heart.

(A) Despite no proof that the consumption of any particular foods reverse hardening of the arteries, studies indicate that refraining from eating certain foods could
(B) Despite no foods having been proved to reverse hardening of the arteries when consumed, studies indicate that refraining from eating certain foods can
(C) Although the consumption of no particular foods have been proved to reverse hardening of the arteries, studies indicate that to refrain from eating certain foods could
(D) Although not proved that the consumption of any foods reverse hardening of the arteries, studies indicate that refraining from eating certain foods can
(E) Although it has not been proved that the consumption of any particular food will reverse hardening of the arteries, studies indicate that refraining from eating certain foods can

D is wrong because "studies" can not be "not proved"

C is wrong because "eating no food" is not logic

B is wrong because "having done" never modify a noun

I can not decide between a and e

Despite is a preposition and although is a subordinating conjunction.

A subordinating conjunction introduces a dependent clause and indicates the nature of the relationship among the independent clause(s) and the dependent clause(s).

In this sentence, a subordinating conjunction is required as we have a dependent and independent clause that have a relationship.

Dependent clause: no proof that the consumption of any particular foods reverse hardening of the arteries

Independent Clause: studies indicate that refraining from eating certain foods could help reverse blockage of coronary arteries, the blood vessels that feed the heart.

So straight away we can strike out A and B as they both use Despite

Then we can strike out C too, as it uses "have". We need to use a singular "has" for consumption.. Similarly we can strike out D as we need to use "reverses" for consumption.

and so we are left with option E

Thanks a lot.

But what about the 2 sentences I picked?
Do they have the same meaning regardless of rhetorical construction?

Thank you.
