bad experience today

by RaviKiran » Wed Sep 01, 2010 6:23 am
HI,

I gave my gmat today and was totally shocked by the score.

My gmat score 590 Q49 V 23 .

My scores in practise tests were as follows:-

Gmat Prep1 720 (3 days before the test)
Gmat Prep2 740 (2 days before the test)

Kaplan diagnostic 670 (2 months before the test)
Knewton free online test 750 ( 1month before the test)
Manhattan free online test 680 (1 month before the test)
Princeton 1 : 620 (15 days before the test)
Princeton 2 : 690 (14 days before the test)
Princeton 3: 620 (13 days before the test)
Princeton 4: 690 (12 days before the test)

I have done Official guide 12th edition. Now , the score of D-day shattered me . I am not understanding what to do now.?
I wish to retake the test 2 months hence. However, I do not understand what material to start with as I have already practiced official guide questions. ( Doing them again , I guess I would already know the answers ).

My mind almost went numb while doing verbal. I was not totally myself while doing verbal. Just had the notion of choosing one option and moving ahead. However, in the end I was left struck. Just sat in the room with my head held down.

I plan to retake test 2months from now with focus on verbal. Kindly let me know of any strategies, books / courses that can be taken.

Regards,
Ravi

Your practice tests scores suggest that you are quite capable of scoring over 700. I guess it must have been a case of nerves during the test.

Buck up, glory awaits you, if only a bit further in time.

Ravi bhai,

I had same experience today! My quant score was 43 and verbal was 33. I am devastated too. Did u study only OG12 for maths? even I am planning to retake the exam 2 months from now.

Could you suggest me a good book to study for maths? I didn't study og12 while preparing. I did just MGMAT books :(

Guys, i think we can start the "I feel sorry for myself club". I call President , you guys can take up whatever titles you want. Two days before the test, 760, Q- 48, V - 47, Four days before the test, 750 Q-50, V- 41 ... Average score in the last two months ..725 (10 practice tests in total)...

Today... 620 .. Q 46, V 29 ....

I am just curious, which country/centers did you guys go to?.

How joyous would it be to win when winning is what we want, when winning is what we deserve, when sacrifices have been made and the hard work has been done and yet, ever so discreetly, comes the deceitful loss. Rejoice still enjoy the free ride on the learning curve and when that ride is over, get up, regroup, resharpen the armor and when the time is right, fight again...fight again..

The Battle

Battle fought, Battle lost,
Spirit low,
But head held high,
no grief, no sigh!
Something's shining, something bright
At the end of the tunnel,
There's always some light

hi guys this is my first post!

I also got a similar score after taking my GMAT for the 2nd time.

1. Q:35 v:38 (580) (last year)
2. Q:44 v:22 (550) a week ago

I am a manager for a small firm that focuses on business process re-engineering.
I have little maths background and learnt English as my native language.

I underestimated the GMAT by neglecting my verbal....By the time the Verbal section arrived, I was mentally destroyed and just wanted to finish the test.

My GMAT tutor told me this is typical as many students focus on their weakness (ie verbal or maths) and forget about the rest.

I am going to try again in a few weeks with more focus on verbal while keeping reinforcing what maths skills i have!

My test scores are generally around the 680 Mark and I am dyslexic.

At this level I don't think you have basic issues such as timing, grammatical rules and approach. You will have work on core weaknesses of yours. You can better find your area of weakness, sit back, relax and think about each type of question you encountered in exam and find what went wrong?

-Where exactly you had to guess?
-Where exactly you were not able to find the concept which question was checking in sentence correction?

-What type of Questions in RC seemed to challenging and you had to guess? Were they "The passage suggests....." or "The passage infers" did you rely on explicitly stated details in passage while answering inference question? That could be a problem because if inference is explicitly stated then it is not an inference.

-In CR, while weakening argument, were you weakening argument as a whole or just conclusion? One must weaken the conclusion which is lumped into argument. Were you picking most obvious choice during the weakening questions, if yes then it could be the problem because most of times, most obvious choice which weakens the argument is not the correct choice.
-Were you paying attention to this trend that after 1-2 SC questions, a CR question appear and right after it a moderate type SC question or RC question? If that was the trend then CR question went wrong. In this trend of algorithm what I have noticed is that if CR question gets right then next question is CR and if this also gets right then another CR question which will most likely to be an argument type question, where two people are engaged in a kind of debate such as Editor..Author or Teacher..student and even if this one gets right then a SC question appears with completely underlined and most probably checking modifier concepts. So think about the trend in exam, your level of confidence for each question and FIND EXACTLY WHERE YOU WERE GUESSING.

HI all,

niksworth , thanks a lot for your words of hope and encouragement.

ajay ,
for mathematics, i have gone through official guide . Gmatprep questions were very much similar to original exam questions. Also while in office I used to do few questions from learnhub.com ( these are 5 to 10 minute tests ) .

victory_gmat,
thanks for providing some tips , I will introspect and work more on my weakness.

Regards,
Ravi
