Did I beat the GMAT?

by iamjakekim » Tue Sep 01, 2009 11:30 am
Hello everyone.

I took GMAT on 28th and got 700 (50/35). I am an accounting senior and planning to apply to MS accounting next year.

As soon as I saw my score, I was thinking "YES I BEAT IT !! I WILL NEVER TAKE IT AGAIN !!!!"

Howver, after listening to my friend, I was like "oh.. damn.. I might have to take it again!!"

Here is how it goes.

My friend and I both took GMAT on the same day and she claims since GMAT in AUGUST was too easy compared to those of other months, my chances of getting admission is slim.

She says that 700 in months other than AUG is like 94 or 96% but since too many people got over 700 in August, my percentile is 90%, which is NOT competitive.

Yes I got 90% on my score... but she said she got well above 700, but since percentile is not competitive compared to other months, she says shes taking it again.

Should I retake it? I think I can get at least 720 or so, but I dont know if it's worth another $250 and my time.

Hey congratulations on your score! I believe that percentiles are calculated based on several years of results (3, as I recall), so your friend is probably misinformed. One month of scores won't dramatically impact the percentile. However, if the MS you're applying to has an average GMAT score of 760 (highly unlikely, IMHO), it may be worth a shot.

Who is this friend and why are you putting so much stock in what she is telling you?

The claim that GMAT in August is easier than in other months is one of the most ridicilous claims I have ever heard.

I echo navalpike's words. That is an extremely bogus claim and you shouldn't be putting that much stock in it.

Anyway thank for clarifying it.

I'm not sure where your friend got her information, I have never heard anything like that before. I took the gmat in May and got a 700 and it was also the 90th percentile.

Dont forget that your high Quant score is also a huge plus. Good luck with apps!
