Didn't manage to beat GMAT

by C Okigbo » Thu Dec 31, 2015 7:16 pm
Happy new year to BTG members!

I wrote my GMAT today 12/31 and only managed to score a 660 (79%): 45(57%) & V36 (80%). This is quite a contrast because quant was actually my strong area but it appears I didn't manage my time well during the test; I had 7 questions to do with 7 mins left and so I had to guess most of them. Obviously, I am a bit disappointed with this score but since I was already geared to apply in R2, I think I will go ahead and apply. My target schools are Tuck, Kellogg, Fuqua, and INSEAD.

I will post my profile on the admissions section so that expert can give me their advice.

Hi C okigbo,

First off, a 660 is a strong score (it's right around the 85th percentile overall), so it might be enough to get you into one of the Schools you've listed. Since those Schools are all highly competitive, it's important that you have a strong OVERALL profile AND that you present yourself properly to each Admissions Committee. You would likely find that working with an Admissions Expert would be quite helpful.

What are the Admissions deadlines for each of those Schools? Since you have to wait just 16 days between Official attempts at the GMAT, you could conceivably retest before the deadlines or retest just a bit afterwards and forward a new score (assuming it's a higher score) to the Schools in question.

Thanks Rich!

All the deadlines for these schools are within the first of week of Jan so I will go ahead and submit and work to re-test by end of this month possibly. I saw some of the schools actually said that one can send updated scores after submitting an application.

I have had an interesting time in the last couple of days. I submitted applications to 7 schools and so far I have interviewed with 2 of them- Kellogg and Tuck. I received an invite from Ross this past Friday and hope to schedule an interview soon. In the meantime, I continue preparing to retake GMAT.

Hi C Okigbo,

That's great news. Any time a School requests an interview, the Schools' representatives are clearly interested in you, but they're looking for you to really 'shine' during the interview. As such, you might want to consider doing some type of 'interview prep', rehearse your answers to common questions, etc.

Another day another invite. This morning I got an invite from Fuqua. This brings the total number of interviews to 4. I applied to 7 schools and have so far interviewed with Kellogg (on campus), Tuck (on campus) and Ross (off campus with an alum). While interviewing and getting an offer are two different things, I am proud of the fact that there is hope out there. I continue preparing to retake GMAT but I am increasingly believing that an offer is in the offing. I will, in this very forum announce the outcome come next month.
