CR 1000 test IV Section 3 Q12

by its_me07 » Mon Dec 10, 2007 7:24 am
what type of this question asks?
OA is C.i thought it would b B

12. The ancient Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten, who had a profound effect during his lifetime on Egyptian art and religion, was well loved and highly respected by his subjects. We know this from the fierce loyalty show to him by his palace guards, as documented in reports written during Akhenaten’s reign.
A questionable technique used in the argument is to
(A) introduce information that actually contradicts the conclusion
(B) rely on evidence that in principle would be impossible to challenge
(C) make a generalization based on a sample that is likely to be unrepresentative
(D) depend on the ambiguity of the term “ancient”
(E) apply present-day standards in an inappropriate way to ancient times

The argument uses the loyalty of his guards as an evidence to justify that his subjects too loved him. Guards are subjects are two different samples; also loyalty and love + respect are not the same. Hence C, which neatly paraphrases the above point

Statement about his guard’s loyalty is a stated premise and hence must be taken as a fact. Therefore we cannot challenge that fact. Hence B is wrong.

Hope that helps!

In the future can you please not provide the OA in your 1st post? That will allow everybody to think and discuss without being prejudiced by the ‘correct’ answer.

Hey...sorry forgot to answer the other question you asked (What type of question is this?)

This type of question asks you to identify the method of argument employed by the author, at times identify the logical flaw. The correct answer of such questions generally do not have explicit facts like 'strengthen' or 'weaken' questions
