In First Question

D/E incorrect, because "achievement OF..." wrong construction
B - "as WERE once thought..." wrong construction
A - "acheiving" is incorrectly modifying "consistency and production" instead of modifying "animals".

COrrect B - "acheiving in farm animals...consistency of quality and production..."

acheiving correctly modifies "farm animals"

In second question,

B seems best option
