Work experience query

by switchfoot » Sun Mar 24, 2013 10:32 pm
Hello Admissionado: My query is regarding corporate work experience. how much of it is good enough? I see typically 4-5 years on B schools webpage. I am targetting fall 2014 admissions and will have 3 years work-ex by then. But I also have experience working as a research assistant for 2 years during Grad school(which I consider as much of a learning experience as my corporate workex). My detailed profile is as described below. Should I go ahead full throttle (applying to 4-6 school) in coming fall or is my profile(from a "work ex" point of view) still raw and I should wait till Fall 15?
GMAT:740 (50Q, 39V)/ 5AWA
Undergrad: Civil Engineering (India)..university in top 10 tech school in India, GPA 8.6/10
Grad: Engineering Mechanics (US)..university in top 15 engineering school in US, GPA 3.87/4
Work in High Tech industry...R&D lab (India)..Also a participant of corporate rotational leadership program..Involved in organizational role for corporate events
Lead innovation programs
Six sigma green belt (under training)
Community work: Teach high school kids on weekends, Hold position of responsiblity in alumni association and active in fundraising.

I am seeking top 15 MBA program with focus on consulting (related to energy/aviation sector) and general managment.

Thanks!

Go ahead full throttle!!!
You have a good profile. Plus, if you have 3 years by next year, you will have 4 by matriculation, which one more than you need. So if the time is right for you, go for it!!!

Hi Jon: Thanks for your reply! I meant I will have 3 years work experience at matriculation. How many schools (any particular one?) I should aim for given my work-ex is on the lower side.

Well that question is easy to answer: As many as you would be happy to go to! I've seen some clients apply to 14 schools (that's the upper limit). I think a good start is to aim for 5-6 R1, and see what happens there, keeping a few schools on the side for R2. Three years by matriculation is a wee bit on the low side, but it's not too bad. Try and let them know that it is three GOOD years, three years of fat and plenty :)
