On a test, students receive 3 points for each correct answer and are penalized by losing one point for each incorrect answer. There are 6 questions on the test and each question has 4 answer options, A, B, C, and D. It is known that 5 of the questions have option B as the correct answer and one question has option C as the correct answer. If a student marks B for the first 3 questions and C for the last 3 questions, what is the minimum possible score that student can receive?

Forget conventional ways of solving math questions. In PS, IVY approach is the easiest and quickest way to find the answer.


On a test, students receive 3 points for each correct answer and are penalized by losing one point for each incorrect answer. There are 6 questions on the test and each question has 4 answer options, A, B, C, and D. It is known that 5 of the questions have option B as the correct answer and one question has option C as the correct answer. If a student marks B for the first 3 questions and C for the last 3 questions, what is the minimum possible score that student can receive?

A. -2

B. -1

C. 0

D. 1

E. 2




To get minimum score the student should have as few as possible correct answers. That means the student should have as many as possible incorrect answers. Since among 6 questions only 1 question has correct answer is C, the student should mark it as B to have as many as incorrect answers. That means the question with correct answer C should be among the first 3 questions. So among the first 3 questions the student should answer only 2 questions correctly and the last 3 questions incorrectly. In that case the number of correct answer is 2, and the number of incorrect answer is 4. So the score is 2*3 -4*1=2. The answer is E.
