I know its an old thread but over the next few days I intend to launch a forum and need to find some decent hosting.

For the forum i've settled on phpbb. Plenty of support and hacks out there so customising should be quick. (Eric, tips on what you've used here would be much appreciated Smile )

Hosting? I've looked at GoDaddy but dont know which one to go for
And then there's also this http://www.freeforums.org/advanced.php

Any idea how good the hosting companies really are??

Honestly, I didn't do that much research into picking a hosting company. I just selected GoDaddy because they are big and fast--I'm fairly satisfied with them so far...

What kind of forum you launching?

The forum is for pre-undergrad students in India. The Indian education system is 10+2+3/4/5 i.e. 10years of schooling, 2years of junior college and 3/4/5 years to get your degree depending on your specialisation.

Specifically, engineers take 4yrs but in the +2phase, they have a lot of exam choices. Targetting them.

Can i get a link to your hosting plan?

I have been using freeforums.org
but that's because its hosting for free...

It's GoDaddy all the way if I want to spend$$. for some odd reasons I wouldn't take freeforums.org 's premium services.
phpBB is robust for not-that heavy duty forums (read: gamers forums)

Guess you met Allwin twice this summer... any suggestion from him? would you get a concession from http://www.neutralweb.com/

I'd take goDaddy. I think you can avail their special offers at right time keep tab on the site...

One quick question, Ryan,

webcomindia.com offers .com for $7.75 but do you need to purchase DNS services for $1. that includes managing CNAME etc, or does it come along with 7.75 package?

so basically u hv to spend 8.75 right?
