as if is subjunctive mood, which is not the fact, wish, request then we need to use, I were.
Example:
If I were a king, I would rule the kingdom peacefully.
If I were born in England, I would have spoken better english.

its a case of subjunctive and in subjunctive mood the verb is always plural irrespective of the subjectsubgeeth wrote:he talked as if he were a New Yorker.
