MBA After Rotation Program

Hi all!

I'm currently in the early stages of a 3-year development program in which I will complete 2 rotations of 1.5 years each. I know that 3 years of post-undergraduate work experience is usually on the lower end for many top MBA programs such as Columbia or Carnegie Mellon, but do you think it would make a compelling case to begin my MBA after the program since it would be an opportunistic time for both my company and me? Obviously, it's very possible to get into a top MBA program with 3 years of work experience regardless, but I don't think my other stats would make up for the lack of work experience (680 GMAT, 3.87 GPA from an average state school) on the typical occasion.

Also, this is a pretty good rotation program in a Fortune 100 company, and I'm convinced that I would get solid recommendations and could (hopefully!) sell myself as being ready to pursue an MBA after my three years.

Given that your rotations will be substantial in length, I think you can indeed apply after the three years. It is more problematic when rotations are every 6 months.

I would say that if possible, try to improve your GMAT for your targeted schools, as 700 or better will give you more breathing room.

I agree with Alex that you can think about retaking your GMAT. But things shouldn't be too problematic. I would say: don't get yourself too comfortable. What I mean is that if you are in a designed program you might be tempted to "just go along with what happens", but by being proactive and trying to organize and commit more than what is asked of you you can really boost your work experience in those three years, as well as how it is perceived by the Adcom.
