statement 1 : xy=6
x=6/y

not sufficient

statement 2 : x+y=5

not sufficient

combining both

x+y=5
6/x+x=5
6+x^2=5x
x^2-5x+6=0
x^2-2x-3x+6=0
x(x-2)-3(x-2)=0
so x=3 or x=2

not sufficient
