The answer looks like E to me.

Rest of the choices look awkward to me. "beginning in 1788" correctly modifies "period of a hundred years". "Over a period" sounds much better than "During" and "Beginning a period" as used in other options.

I think the answer is "E"
My reasons to choose E and eliminate others are:

A & B: Suggest that England had its beginning in 1788
C: "Beginning a period of almost a hundred years" - begining what?, this part seems to be without a subject.
D: This option uses 'a period beginning in 1788' as a non-essential modifier, whereas it is an essential modifier that helps in identifying the period.
Thanks and Regards,
Varun

Like other options, D also seems to be misplaced modifier (not 'non-essential modifier' - as 'thr is no comma after 1788).

Agree with Hardik and Jock's explanation. IMO E

For almost a hundred years after having its begin¬ning in 1788, England exiled some 160,000 criminals to Australia.

(A) For almost a hundred years after having its beginning in 1788,
(B) Beginning in 1788 for a period of a hundred years,
(C) Beginning a period of almost a hundred years, in 1788
(D) During a hundred years, a period beginning in 1788,
(E) Over a period of a hundred years beginning in 1788,

plz explain yr answer[/quote]

Explanation:

Choice A is incorrect because "its" logically refers to England, and finally leads to the meaning that England was began in 1788. B is wrong for the same reason as it is in A. C is not correct because "in 1778 England began a period". D is incorrect because it means that "100 years began in 1778". Answer is E.
