Hi swerve,

We're told that a certain man can row a boat at 12 miles per hour in still water, but he is rowing against an 8 miles per hour current. We're asked how long it will take him to row 6 miles.

Since he is rowing AGAINST a current, his speed will be DECREASED by 8 miles/hour. Thus, the man is rowing a 'new' speed of 12-8 = 4 miles/hour.

We can now use the Distance Formula:
Distance = (Rate)(Time)
6 miles = (4 mi/hour)(T hours)
6/4 = T
1.5 hours = T

Final Answer: B

Since there is an 8 mile-per-hour current, the boat is actually traveling 12 - 8 = 4 miles per hour against the current. Therefore, the time to travel 6 miles is 6/4 = 1.5 hours.
