According to the table given below, a state has a total of 23,000 number of companies from seven regions. By what percent of the total number of companies of Region S is more than the number of companies of Region R?

Region-wise distribution of companies in the state

Region P--2345
Region Q--3456
Region R--3421
Region S--5721
Region T--3445
Region U--80
Region V--4532

(A) 5% (B) 10% (C) 17.5% (D) 22.5% (E) 33.33%

OA: B

Though got the correct answer, is there any short-cut to lengthy calculations?

Hi stevecultt,

We see some ugly numbers to deal with.

We have:

Region-wise distribution of companies in the state

Region P--2345
Region Q--3456
Region R--3421
Region S--5721
Region T--3445
Region U--80
Region V--4532
Total -- 23,000

In the GMAT, you would be seldom asked to do calculations that consume a lot of time. Even if you see some ugly numbers to deal with, you need not put in too much time on it. Mostly, there would be a smarter approach to deal with the question.

We are asked to find out the percentage difference between the number of companies of Region S and that of Region R. Instead of calculating the individual percentages, let's save time and directly calculate the percentage difference.

It is given that the number of companies of Region S = 5721 and the number of companies of Region R = 3421;

Thus, the difference = 5721 − 3421 = 2300; we see a good number:)

Thus, the percentage difference of number of companies of Region S and that of region R of the total

=
(2300/23000) × 100% = 10%.
The correct answer is option B.

Hope this helps!

Hi stevecultt,

What is the source of this question (and did you copy it word-for-word?)? I ask because the wording and 'style' of the prompt does not match-up with what you'll see on Test Day.
