500 ds test11 # 17

by dunkin77 » Thu Apr 19, 2007 12:11 pm
17. Four dollar amounts, w, x, y, and z, were invested in a business. Which amount was greatest'?

(1) y < z < x
(2) x was 25 percent of the total of the four investments.

Hi,

I though the answer should be E) (cause w could be greater than x) but the correct answer is shown as C) -- Can anyone confirm this??

By (2) x is 25% of the value. By (1), y and z have to be lesser than 25% each (also fulfilling y<z). What this means is that the value if w should be greater than 25% and hence it would have the greatest value. Hence the correct option is C

ok, I think I miscalculated....

even thoug y and z are close enough to 25, say, y23% < z24% < x25% then, w would still be greater than 25%.

hence, C) is correct.
