If 500 is the multiple of 100 that is cloest to x and 400 is the multiple of 100 that is closest y, which multiple of 100 is cloest to x+y?

1) x<500
2) y<400

500 is the multiple of 100 that is cloest to x implies 450 < x < 550
400 is the multiple of 100 that is closest to y implies 350 < y < 450

(1) x < 500 implies 450 < x < 500
Adding 450 < x < 500 and 350 < y < 450, we get 800 < x + y < 950
If x + y = 810, then closest multiple of 100 is 800
If x + y = 860, then closest multiple of 100 is 900
No definite answer; NOT sufficient.

(2) y < 400 implies 350 < y < 400
Adding 350 < y < 400 and 450 < x < 550, we get 800 < x + y < 950
We can take same example as in statement 1.
No definite answer; NOT sufficient.

Combining (1) and (2), adding 450 < x < 500 and 350 < y < 400, we get 800 < x + y < 900
Again the same examples as in statement 1 are applicable here too; NOT sufficient.

The correct answer is E.
