Mean and Median question

by Leon1984 » Wed Oct 28, 2009 4:41 am
Hello. Please explain HOW to solve this question:

A list of measurements in increasing order is 4,5,6,8,10 and x. The median is 6/7 times the mean. What is the value of x?

How should I approach and sole this?

Thank you
Leon

I get 16.

avg = 4+5+6+8+10+x /6 = (33+x)/6

median = 7 (i.e half way between item num 3 and 4 since there are 6 items)

question stem tells you that:

6/7 * (33+x)/6 = 7 --> 49/6 = 33+x /6 --> 49 = 33+x --> x = 49-33 = 16
