Sentence Correction - Mays

Hi there,

I would like to know how to proceed in order to resolve this SC :

During the same period in which the Mays were developing a hieroglyphic system of writing, the Aztec people also developed a written language, but it was not as highly sophisticated as that of the Maya and was more pictographic in nature.

(A) but it was not as highly sophisticated as that of the Maya and was
(B) not as highly sophisticated as that of the Maya, however, being
(C) but it was not as highly sophisticated as the Maya, being
(D) not as highly sophisticated as the Maya’s however, it was
(E) but, not as highly sophisticated as the Maya’s, was

I chose A.

"but" is needed because it's connecting two independent clauses. So eliminate choice B and D.

eliminate choice E because the caluse after "but" does not have a subject.

eliminate choice C because error in parallelism. the word "it" refers to writing, so it should be compared with the writing of the Maya, not the Maya. Choice A correctly compares "it" with "that of the Maya".

My Choice is A.
"...as the maya's..." is ambiguous. "That of Maya..." is more clearer.So C, D and E can be eliminated.

IMO A...
was confused b/w A & D...but for the sake of choosing one option would like to go with A.

idiomatic usage-as X as Y
IMO-A

A is the only answer choice that weds the two clauses without run on sentence problems.
