To portray virtue as a function of simplicity, the ‘noble savage’ image, in which the nature of a being naive, and, therefore, noble, is following in a long tradition of Chroniclers, from Columbus to Steinbeck.

a)
b) and, so, noble, was following
c) and, therefore, noble, is to follow in
d) but also, noble was to follow
e) but is noble as well, is following in

Yep. Parallelism is the key.

To portray ... is to follow

So A, B & E are out.

"but also" should be used with "not only" prior. Also, "but also, noble" is awkward. So D is out.

Regards.

yes paralellism seems to be key, but somehow i feel orginal can also be right, if we look first as dependant clause ,and subsequently an independant clause...smthg as follows

To portray virtue as a function of simplicity, the ‘noble savage’ .. is following in a long tradition of Chroniclers,

'to' in begining seems more like a conjunction than infinitive ...!!

To portray virtue as a function of simplicity : dependant

the ‘noble savage’ .. is following in a long tradition of Chroniclers, : independant

ps: orignal post modified to inc underline

You make a good point. The problem with this understanding is that 'noble savage' is put in quotes, so it is presented as a concept, not as a person. Interpreting the sentence to mean
  • "To portray virtue as a function of simplicity, the ‘noble savage’ .. is following in a long tradition of Chroniclers"
is incorrect because a concept ('noble savage') cannot portray a virtue.
