Easy one but not getting the answer

by gmat740 » Thu Mar 19, 2009 9:07 pm
A discussion of our nations foreign policy must begin with the fact of there being an independent Western Europe which now thinks of itself in trans-nationalist terms.

(A) A discussion of our nations foreign policy must begin with the fact of there being
(B) Beginning any discussion of our nations foreign policy must be the fact of there being
(C) Any discussion of our nations foreign policy must begin with the fact that there is
(D) Any discussion of our nations foreign policy must begin by acknowledging the existence of
(E) To begin discussing our nations foreign policy thee must be an acknowledgment of the fact that

OA D

What's wrong with option C

(C) Any discussion of our nations foreign policy must begin with the fact that there is
(D) Any discussion of our nations foreign policy must begin by acknowledging the existence of

In the choices above remove "of our nations foreign policy", you get

(C) Any discussion must begin with the fact that there is
(D) Any discussion must begin by acknowledging the existence of

D) sounds better, a discussion cannot begin with a fact as stated in C), whereas it can begin by acknowledging something.

Your reply is not as convincing as in GMAT we dont always depend upon our ears, I need some concepts for this.

in terms of meaning C doesn't make much sense. u cant start a discussion with "a fact that..."
also "the fact that there is" is considered wordy on the GMAT

Hi Karan and you're very welcome!
thanks for the kind words and the question. i study off manhattan gmat books, kaplan, princeton, and this website. i seem to be having trouble with the verbal as well. i'm not a big fan of reading. i guess the best way to prepare is to do a lot of practice problems.
