Have Vs With

by goelmohit2002 » Mon Mar 09, 2009 12:04 pm
Hi All,

In the following Question the answer is "A". I was able to narrow down to "A" and "D". Can somebody please tell why "A" is preferable over "D" ?

The republic of Philippines encompasses more than seven thousand islands, two of them with two thirds of its area.

A) two of them with two thirds of its area
B) two thirds of their area being in two of them
C) and its area is two thirds in two islands
D) two of them have two thirds of its area
E) which have two thirds of its area in two of them

Thanks
Mohit

This is a very good question:

The republic of Philippines encompasses more than seven thousand islands, two of them with two thirds of its area.

A) two of them with two thirds of its area
B) two thirds of their area being in two of them
C) and its area is two thirds in two islands
D) two of them have two thirds of its area
E) which have two thirds of its area in two of them

both B and D are correct in their own sense.
But a portion of the sentence after comma has to be a dependent clause, if it is an independent sentence/clause(that makes sense on its own) then we must put a semi colon instead of a comma
In D, two of them have two-thirds of its area makes sense hence we must put a semicolon, which is not present. Hence B is a better option
target score- anything above 700
preferably above 750

Moreover in "B" IMO there is pronoun reference issue. "Their area"....since we are talking about the Philippines area, so IMO it should be "its area".

Thanks

Got a thread about this question as below:

https://gmatclub.com/forum/11-t16737

Over there "D" is rejected as "D" is said to be "run on sentence".....can somebody please help me understand why "D" is run on and "A" is not run on.

Thanks
Mohit

D) two of them have two thirds of its area
it has subject two and verb have, it's a stand alone sentence.

A) two of them with two thirds of its area
there's no verb.

Two independenat clauses should be joined by a semicolon. (Please refer to OG Verbal Review question 10's explanation too.)
