Which one GMAT prefers

by goelmohit2002 » Tue Mar 10, 2009 12:36 pm
Hi All,

Can somebody please tell does the following two sentence mean same ? Are they both acceptable in GMAT. If yes, is there one that is a preferred sentence in GMAT and Why ? or both are equally correct in GMAT ?

1. Long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate, Josephine Baker made Paris her home.
2. Josephine Baker made Paris her home, Long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate.

Thanks
Mohit

IMO, if there are 2 or more answer choices that are correct in themselves, you have to look at the rest of the sentence. There has to be some other hints somewhere in the context that will tell you which choice is better.

Without context, I don't think it's worth it to analyse which choice is "GMAT preferred".

Modifiers..
2) Josephine Baker made Paris her home, Long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate.

Long before it was fashi..... modifies home..which is incorrect. Modifiers to be placed next to the logical word / clause they tend to modify.

a) Long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate, Josephine Baker
Here , Josephine Baker is modifer for the expatriate. and hence is correct.

Also, please provide a context for better explanation.
