Hi,
Option A,B and C are out because of wrong comparison.
Unlike X,.....Y (X and Y should be of same type)
Unlike ..Severance package......., Automobile company's package... is correct
Between D and E. D makes more sense in meaning.
Most packages required workers to stay till last schedule date in order to collect , but in AM they need not.
Thanks.
Regards,
Uva.

A and B: Unlike most severance packages...workers at the automobile company...
Here, workers are illogically compared to most severance packages.
Eliminate A and B.
C: Unlike most severance packages...the automobile company...

Eliminate C.
Phrase: the amount that John is scheduled to collect
Here, that is standing in for the amount.
Conveyed meaning:
John is scheduled TO COLLECT THE AMOUNT.
In other words, THE AMOUNT is what John will COLLECT.
E: the last day that they are scheduled to collect
Here, that is standing in for the last day.
Conveyed meaning:
Workers are scheduled TO COLLECT THE LAST DAY.
In other words, THE LAST DAY is what workers will COLLECT.
Not the intended meaning.
Eliminate E.
The correct answer is D.

Eliminate A, B, and C because the introductory clause must introduce a severance package.
Eliminate E because 'that' is a relative pronoun meaning what follows describes what comes before it and the workers are not collecting days.
