IMO C, We need a "modifier" adding more info about the $167 billion.

A : Wrong comparison ( Amount VS Year)
B: Awkward sentence/ Unnecessary usage of " it"
D: Poor construction
E: Wordy. Moreover unwanted transition in tenses. awkward construction.
C : Noun Modifier
.

Can u plz recheck whether it should be "offset or offsets"?? I guess i shall be offset as it matches with plural subject( sales)

I think the answer should be E. C has a problem, "14 percent higher............" should modify $167 billion but it is incorrectly modifying 1992 ( as it is placed next to 1992). Moreover, I agree that it should be offsets and not offset.

A - comparison error (number is compared to year)
B - what does it refers to? Does it refer to $ 162 billion?
C - requires a verb to make it parallel with non-underlined 'largely offsets..'
D - comparison error (162 is 14 percent more than the previous year was) - it should compare figure in 1992 to that in previous year. IMO E

A - comparison error (number is compared to year)
B - what does it refers to? should say higher than sales in previous year
C - requires a verb to make it parallel with non-underlined 'largely offsets..' else sounds as if sales is offset again not correct as offsets refers to singular subject
D - comparison error - (amount is compared to year)
IMO E - comparison is correct-amount and figure and also "an amount" is singular subject for verb "offsets"

1947, I liked your explanation.

Can you tell whether the following sentence is right?

Sales of United States manufactured goods to non industrialized countries rose to $167 billion in 1992,14 percent higher than the previous year's figure .

is 14 percent modifying $167 billion or 1992?
Thanks,
Ashutosh

14 percent higher than the previous year's figure is a modifier which in this case could modify either Sales or $167 billion. Its ambiguous hence not correct.

E states "an amount", clearly referring to $167 billion.
E should be correct.

I think 14 percent could modify either of these: $167 billion or 1992
that's why this is incorrect.
Some experts explaination needed here....

any I found this link from google
https://e-gmat.com/blogs/?p=575 Noun,noun-modifier,that clause
https://e-gmat.com/blogs/?p=605
these might help

Hi GK,

Since you did not post OA, I assume that seek explanation even now:
(A) which is 14 percent more than the previous year : What is 14% more and with what (With Year?
(B) which is 14 percent higher than it was the previous year : Same as above but in this Higher is used which is better. However, out
(C) 14 percent higher than the previous year's figure: Gives confusion about %age. We need a noun here
(D) an amount that is 14 percent more than the previous year was: We need higher, use of was is wrong
(E) an amount that is 14 percent higher than the previous year's figure : All doubts above are eliminated.

If my effort is good, let me know the OA.

Thanks

Sales of United States manufactured goods to non industrialized countries rose to $167 billion in 1992, which is 14 percent more than the previous year and largely offsets weak demand from Europe and Japan.

(A) which is 14 percent more than the previous year ... whichincorrectly refers to 1992.

(B) which is 14 percent higher than it was the previous year ... whichincorrectly refers to 1992.

(C) 14 percent higher than the previous year's figure not parallell to largely offsets weak demand from Europe and Japan.

(D) an amount that is 14 percent more than the previous year was ... awkward and not parallell to largely offsets weak demand from Europe and Japan.

(E) an amount that is 14 percent higher than the previous year's figure ... correct answer

The answer E solve all the issues.
