Trouble with Error Log on Mac

by scaryslc » Tue Sep 07, 2010 7:50 pm
I'm on day 20 of the 60 day study plan. Yesterday I went to open my error log and found the file had an error and was corrupted!! I was devastated. I (stupidly) didn't have a back up on my external hard drive, so all my work for the first 19 days was lost. I spent most of the day trying to recover the file. I even went to the Apple store and the guys there couldn't get it. So I upgraded my operating system to include Time Machine (an auto-backup feature on Macs) and also saved my new spreadsheet from the problems I did yesterday on my external hard drive. Today, my NEW file is now corrupt AND the backed-up version is corrupt, too!!!

I'm really bummed cause I didn't keep track of what questions I got wrong, so in order to review them I'll have to do ALL the questions over again :(

Has anyone else had problems with the OG error log file when working on a Mac? I have Office 2008 for Macs. I think I'm beyond the point of using the error log and will just have to create my own from here on out, but I thought I'd ask the question anyway.

Really sorry to hear this--I have a mac and this error log has been working fine for me. But REALLY bummed out that you lost all of that data. :(

I've had the same problem. For a long time, I couldn't open the error log on my MAC. Finally, this morning, I tried again and it opened. I just spent the last 3 hours inputing all my answers from the OG. I closed the file and then attempted to re-open it. Unfortunately, it's not working. I can open and download a new error log, but I have zero confidence that it will actually work if I go through the trouble of entering all my answers again. It's very frustrating. What a waste of time.

While we're on the topic of MAC compatibility, why doesn't MBA.com offer test prep software that can be used on a MAC? How is it possible that the only company that can administer the GMAT doesn't offer the most basic of services? Any recommendations for other test prep software that is compatible with a MAC?

Thanks,
Amber H

Urgh, really sorry about this!

Can you tell me what version of Office you are using? This spreadsheet appears to open and operate just fine on my Mac.

And with regard to GMATPrep--yes, unfortunately it's only PC-compatible. You may need to borrow a friend's PC, or buy VMWare + Windows to run it (that's what I did).

Again, apologies for the inconvenience with the spreadsheet!

Thanks for the quick reply, Eric. I'm using Excel 2004.

Try this version of the OG Error Tool. I saved it again in my Mac (version 2007), but I saved it as an older version that should work for 2004. Let me know if you have problems still.

Hi Eric,

Unfortunately, it's still not working. I can open it by double-clicking from the site, but once I save it to my desktop and try to re-open it, it doesn't work.

Thanks,
Amber

Unfortunately, no progress yet. I've been trying to get my hands on Mac 2004 for Mac, but no luck yet. It works great on Mac 2007! But this log is definitely not a good enough reason to pay money to upgrade.

Sorry about the slowness.

Hi,

I have the same issue with both versions of the error log. My Mac has Office 2004, and it keeps saying that the the problem is an encryption issue. Is there another version of this error log that is unencrypted?

I will try to take a look at this. I don't have Office 2004 on my mac, but I will still see if I can get this resolved.

Any update? I just ran into the same issue stated above. Google Docs will open the file and the answers are still present, but Google does not support the function of green/ red so feedback is minimal.

Thanks.

Hi Joe,

Really sorry, but there hasn't been an update for troubleshooting this issue. I use a Mac and I have the latest office, and I encounter no issues, so I can't seem to replicate this bug. Perhaps we need to create a Google Doc version of this error log for people. I'm so annoyed this doesn't work for you! :(

Any luck using this error log with Mac?

I am currently using the log with Google Docs but it does not color code the answers to indicate whether or not they are correct. Does anyone know a way around this?

Please let me know, thank you!
