Tricky DS

Patrick is cleaning his house in anticipation of the arrival of guests. He needs to vacuum the floors, fold the laundry, and put away the dishes after the dishwasher completes its cycle. If the dishwasher is currently running and has 55 minutes remaining in its cycle, can Patrick complete all of the tasks before his guests arrive in exactly 1 hour?

(1) Vacuuming the floors and folding the laundry will take Patrick 36 minutes.

(2) Putting away the dishes will take Patrick 7 minutes.

We want to know if Patrick will be ready in time.

Missing info: time to vacuum, time to fold, time to put away the dishes.

(1) tells us he can vacuum and fold in time, but no info about dishes: insufficient.

(2) We know that the dishwasher will be done in 55 minutes. If it takes Patrick another 7 minutes to put the dishes away, he will definitely NOT be finished all the tasks in 60 minutes. Accordingly, (2) gives us a definite "no" answer to the question: sufficient.

(2) is sufficient, (1) isn't: choose (B).
