Hi there,

I would like to know how to proceed in order to resolve this SC :

A study of food resources in the North Pacific between 1989 and 1996 revealed that creatures of the seabed were suffering from dwindling food supplies, possibly resulting from increasing sea surface temperatures during the same period.

(A) that creatures of the seabed were suffering from dwindling food supplies, possibly resulting from
increasing
(B) that creatures of the seabed were suffering because of food supplies, which were dwindling possibly as
a result of increasing
(C) creatures of the seabed that were suffering from food supplies that were dwindling, possibly resulting
from an increase in
(D) creatures of the seabed that were suffering because food supplies were dwindling, which possibly
resulted from increasing
(E) that creatures of the seabed were suffering because food supplies were dwindling, possibly as a result
of an increase in

it is a 3-2 split.
usage of because and because of
'that' used as a modifier-eliminate C and D.
parallelism- suffering... dwindling....increasing..

IMO ans is Option B.

OA pls.

I would go with E here unless i missed something stupid :) .Here are my reasons...

A. "creatures of the seabed were suffering from dwindling food supplies" X suffers from Y indicates that Y is some kind of a disease of difficulty that X suffers from. "Because" would clear the meaning and indicate causality.

B. "Creatures... were suffering because of food supplies" ???? That doesn't make any sense does it?

C, D. "That" is required otherwise the sentence would mean - "A Study revealed.... Creatures of the sea bed" The study reveals the reason why these creatures suffer not the creatures itself..

E. Correct. Here Because indicated the causality, and is grammatically correct.

@vyomb,

You indicated parallelism as a reason for eliminating some answers. Be careful, coz here there is this is not the reason. Only logically parallel phrases need be grammatically parallel. In this sentence The creatures are not "suffering... dwindling....increasing". So the reasoning that you gave would not stand..
