Sodium Intake--LSAT

by ssgmatter » Wed Mar 31, 2010 8:18 am
Studies suggest that, for the vast majority of people
who have normal blood pressure, any amount of
sodium greater than that required by the body is simply
excreted and does not significantly raise blood pressure.
So only persons who have high blood pressure and
whose bodies are incapable of safely processing excess
sodium need to restrict their sodium intake.
Which one of the following, if true, would most
seriously weaken the argument?
(A) High blood pressure is more harmful than was
previously believed.
(B) High blood pressure is sometimes exacerbated
by intake of more sodium than the body
requires.
(C) Excess sodium intake over time often destroys
the body's ability to process excess sodium.
(D) Every human being has a physiological need for
at least some sodium.
(E) Any sodium not used by the body will incr

May I request Gurus to pitch in for this one...

conclusion- "only persons who have high blood pressure and
whose bodies are incapable of safely processing excess
sodium need to restrict their sodium intake."
A.out of scope.we are talkig abt effects of sodium and not harmflness of BP
B.support the conclusion
C. weakens the conclusion by saying that people without BP but excess intake of sodium can fall in trouble
D. Out of scope
E. supports the conclusion

IMO C.

The conclusion of the statement cautions HIGH BP people only but C presents the case in which normal BP people can also fall into the trap.

IMO : C
C states that its not HBP rather excess intake of sodium over time that causes indigestion of sodium and thus HBP.
This clearly states an alternate cause and undermines the argument.
I am on a break !!

The answer must be C. I think E is not mentioned clearly here. I prephrase the answer. One thing is that people are eating more salt but do not have high BP. But there are people who eat less salt but have high BP (This is my assumption). I tried to find out something, which leads high salt intake in high BP in future. C does the same.

@suman bhai,

I would call this kind of weakening as "causal reversal" rather than " alternate reasoning typos". Please chk out PSCR bible.

C as it is chained logic...

As it will create problem in body's ability to process sodium which will eventually cause the same result
"bodies are incapable of safely processing excess sodium need to restrict their sodium intake."
