Dear Friends,
I was having problems in answering the following question.
Antarctica receives more solar radiation than does any other place on Earth, yet the
temperatures are so cold and the ice cap is reflective, so that little polar ice melts
during the summer; otherwise, the water levels of the oceans would rise 250 feet and
engulf most of the world's great cities.
A. is reflective, so that little polar ice melts during the summer; otherwise,
B. is so reflective that little of the polar ice melts during the summer; were it to do so,
C. so reflective that little polar ice melts during the summer, or else
D. reflective, so that little of the polar ice melts during the summer, or
E. reflects so that little of the polar ice melts during the summer; if it did
Please help.
OA after some discussions.
My choice was option C
Regards
Deano.

so cold ..so reflective is the parallel structure here.
only B and C prevail.
C uses an or for the second clause which changes the meaning of the sentence. The second clause is a consequence basically.
B the usage of 'it' is somewhat wrong. The sentence after that a semicolon should not have dependency.
debatable yet B here.

the temperatures are so cold and the ice cap is reflective - part before and after AND should be parallel. Since part after AND is underlined, we will take guidance from part before AND.Dean Jones wrote:Dear Friends,

C. so reflective that little polar ice melts during the summer, or else
D. reflective, so that little of the polar ice melts during the summer, or
E. reflects so that little of the polar ice melts during the summer; if it did
THE TEMPERATURE ARE SO COLD (Subj Verbal Adjective)....AND....THE ICE CAP IS SO REFLECTIVE (Subj Verbal Adjective)
Therefore only A & B meets our need.
A has couple of problems - (1) uncessary use of SO after comma, (2) we need THAT CLAUSE immediately after reflective to signify the impact of VERY COLD TEMP AND VERY REFLECTIVE ICE CAP, (3) comma after reflective not required
B - This appears correct (though WERE IT TO DO SO appears incorrect, but IMO this is a inverted IF statement that too without IF). The 2nd part of the sentence would be 'IF IT WERE TO DO SO, the water levels of the oceans would rise 250 feet and engulf most of the world's great cities'
IMO B
