Profile Evaluation

by GI82 » Fri Jun 17, 2016 7:38 am
Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if I could get a view on the quality and fit of my profile for my target schools - MIT (LGO), IMD, Cambridge, Yale, IE - Madrid and ISB Hyderabad.

My profile summary:

- Indian, Male, 33 years, based out of London
- Education background: BE from RGPV (First Class), PGDM from LBSIM (First class) and MSc in Logistics and Supply Chain Management from Cranfield University (2.1 degree). Professional certifications (MCIPS and PRINCE2)
- GMAT - Will have to retake GMAT as my previous score of 730 is about to expire.
- Got a good view of why I need my MBA and why in particular a second MBA

- Work Experience: Over 10 years, all in supply chain and operations consulting (Non IT)
-- Holding a managerial role with a UK based niche consulting firm in procurement management. Leading the logistics capability practice.
-- Spread across supply chain domains; including Procurement, Logistics, Manufacturing and Retail
-- Across geographies: Worked out of firms based in India, Asia Pacific and Europe. Have lived and worked in more than 7 countries
-- Industry sector: Mostly FMCG. Can boast of working with clients like Nestle, Coca Cola, McDonalds and a few other leading European companies

- Apart from work:
-- Cricket, like every second Indian guy - I play for a club based in London
-- Charity work - Working with a charity that focuses on delivering AIDS awareness and prevention programmes in Africa. Helping them with corporate communication and programme management
-- Thought leadership - Got a few articles published in leading business magazines. Guest lecturing in a UK university
-- Motorbiking - Took up long trips in Europe and in India

It will be great if you could please have a look at my profile and comment. I'm retaking my GMAT in a month and I expect a similar score as before.

Thanks

Regards
Gopal

Thanks for sharing.

From what you have shared, you will bring interesting work experiences, international exposure and extracurricular activities. Play up your leadership responsibilities, and ability collaborate with clients across industries. This will help show what you can contribute to the class and help justify being a slightly older applicant.

As you are aware, you need to identify why you need a second MBA, and how it would help you well-defined post-MBA goals.

All the best!

Hi Gopal

Your profile seems a pretty good fit with the schools you have listed, with the possible exception of Yale. Not sure if you already have, but you could also consider Oxford (Saïd) and INSEAD in addition as well as the IIM Executive Programs in India (IIMB EPGP, IIMC PGPEX, and IIMA PGPX are 3 good targets, and each would value the international experience and magnitude of work-ex you bring in as well). You are on the higher side in terms of age, and this will be your second MBA - clarity in terms of your goals and why you are seeking this education at this time will be critical. A little bit more on the schools later.

Your profile is really solid from an academic and professional point of view. The MSc in Logistics and SCM from Cranfield really adds to it. You will need to explain the need for a second MBA, especially given that you have a Master's as well (would like to understand at more depth to be able to comment more deeply on that, but assuming you have it covered for now). The GMAT score is really good, and if you can get a similar one on your retake now, you should be very well placed. In fact, even a drop of 10-20 points too wouldn't harm much. In terms of your professional profile, the international experience is very valuable, and so is your work with top FMCG firms. Your ECAs seem decent as well. The fact that you actually play for a club helps to differentiate your interest in cricket beyond what most Indians have (they usually don't play after they start to work). The charity work will need to be reviewed to determine the level of involvement, but the guest lecturing is very positive, and the motorbike trips will be helpful in bringing out your personal passions (can be pretty important on some MBA apps).

Another quick note before we close this - not sure about your choice of the LGO program at MIT. That is a combined MS + MBA, and given the fact that you already have a Master's in SCM (Cranfield), it will be tough to really show a need for that component. The MBA can be a different matter, though, but the LGO is a package with both. It will also therefore take longer, and all of the other programs you list (except Yale) are 1-year programs.

Hope this helps and feel free to come back with further questions as needed.
