Let's look at a much more complicated question: "A fair coin is flipped 5 times. What's the probability of getting at least 2 heads?" If we want at least 2 heads, we want 2 heads, 3 heads, 4 heads OR 5 heads. Pretty much whenever we see "OR" in probability, we add the individual...

Sid is twice as old as Rex. Ten years ago, Sid was four times as old as Rex. How old is Sid today? Let S = Sid's age Let R = Rex's age we can get 2 equations by translating the English into math: now: (i)S = 2R ten years ago: (ii)S-10=4(R-10) i)S = 2R ii)S = 4R - 40 +10 [manipulate eq ii] 2R = 4R -...

I think the strategy outlined is great. However, for coin problems or any problems where you have multiple trials and the probabilities stay the same I like to use bernouli's formula: (nCr)p^r x q^n-r n = number of trials r = number of specific events you wish to obtain p = probability that the even...

This is a geometric series.
The n-th term of a geometric sequence with initial value a1 and common ratio r is given by
an = a1r^n-1
a1 = 1
r = 2
a16 = 1 (2)^ 15
a17 = 1(2) ^16
a18 = 1(2) ^17
a16 + a17 + a18 =
2^15 + 2^16 + 2^17
Factor out 2^15
2^15(1 + 2 + 2^2)
2^15(7)
My answer would be E.

(1)2x - 2y = 1 (2)x/y > 1 Statement 1: 2x - 2y = 1 On the left side of the table we put the the x values and across the top we put useful test cases. We can manipulate the equation so we can solve for ...

Don't try to work on them all together. First work on speed. The average reader reads at 150 wpm. Most pe...
