A , B and C are definitely wrong, between D and E, I go with E, because D does not prove any thing about Egyptian knowledge about golden ratio.

Another problem with E :

Whereas is a conj. that should connect two independent sentence. In this case we have a phrase in first part (before whereas) that makes this option totally wrong.
