slightly shorter route: first i found the variables needed to get the answer (m, n) and their relevant equations: z + 4 = m y + e = n so z + 4 + y + e = m + n -------------------- then all i need is z, e, and y just pick the ones you need z + e = 10 y + 4 = -5 plug in 10 for (z + e) and -9 for (y) 1...

2^z = 2^x * 2^y where x + y = z
ex:
2^6 = 2^2 * 2^4 (2+4 = 6)

so 2^(x-2) = 2^x * 2^-2 (x-2 = x-2)
