you ever use the binary method? 70% of the time on prob. problem I prefer to use combination. 90% of those times you have to reduce it to a binary problem. Tanya prepared four different letters to be sent to four different addresses. For each letter, she prepared an envelope with its correct address...

good stuff. Do you know why my method of using binary (R or W) for 4 slots is wrong intuitively? I use the binary method all the time. Kinda scary that it does not work sometimes. (Here's the reason why it doesn't work. This is not intuitive though. 2^4 represents ALL combination of R or W arranged ...

If ab does not equal 0 and points (-a, b) and (-b, a) are in the same quadrant of the xy-plane, is point (-x,y) in this same quadrant? 1) xy > 0 2) ax > 0 Can someone explain why I am wrong here? Problem: from the problem given, we know that a,b have the same sign but we don't know what it is. ++ or...

Remainder

What is remainder when X^2-4x+11 is divided by 3?

1) x+1 is divisible by 3
2) x-2 is divisible by 3

My way:

1) X^2-4x+11=3q
2) subtract 7 both sides. x^2-4x+4=3q-7
3) (x-2)(x-2)=3q-7
4) since x+1 is divisible by 3; x-2 is divisible by 3. Thus remainder is 2.

Can someone confirm.

SVA

Just a quick question here about SVA. I made these up. What is correct in each case? I know that "and" turns things plural but I've seen many cases in GMAT where this can be tricky. Can an expert please elaborate. 1) The way Scott and John run is/are funny 2) The way Scott runs and the way...

Two questions here: 1) Can you assume that the arc here is generated by a 1/4 of a circle? ("Arc is centered at C") 2) If its not, I don't see how the arc is relevant in this problem Here's how I solved it (assuming 1/4 circle). a) Since its part of the circle then the radius is 8 b) Since...
