After reading all the explanations I'm still confused. "...Since a letter in handwriting identified as that of the fourth copyist mentions a plague that killed many people in florence in 1148...". My understanding is that the author mention exactly the plague of 1148 and not another one. S...


I had a look at the idiom list in the mgmat but I couldn't find the idiom "aid in healing".
Could someone please clarify why "aid in healing" is better than "aid to heal" ?

IMO the benefit of using "unless" instead of "if not" is that we avoid two negations in the same sentence, thus making it easier to be understood.
