You can also look at it this way:

x is the weight of the cucumber after water evaporation, i.e. with 98% water

x - 98% of x = 1 pound

x - 0.98x = 1

0.02x = 1

x = 1/0.02

x = 50

(a) f(x)=x^2 => means you have to substitute x with (a+b) or (a) or (b) so in this case f(a+b) = (a+b)^2, while f(a) = a^2 and f(b) = b^2 So is (a+b)^2 = a^2 + b^2 ? Well, (a+b)^2 = a^2 + b^2 + 2ab which is different from a^2 + b^2 because it contains the factor 2ab. Therefore we eliminate (a). Sugg...

If the question is s^n = 4^n + 5^(n+1) + 3? Then: - 4^n gives a sequence 4, 16, 64, ... so jumps with units from 4 to 6 to 4 to 6 etc... with 6 when exponent (n) is even and 4 when n is odd. So in our case since n is 100 (even) it is equal to 6. - 5^(n+1) gives always a unit digit equal to 5 since 2...

Is |x| = y - z ? 1) x + y = z 2) x < 0 I think this method can help: 1) x = z - y => - x = y - z => |x| = - x therefore if x = 0 then equation |x| = y - z is TRUE, if x is any other number is FALSE since no absolute value of a number x can equal a negative number - x. So 1) is not sufficient because...

Is n odd ? 1. a^n – b^n is divisible by a – b 2. a^n + b^n is not divisible by a + b 1. Take n=2 =( a^2-b^2) = (a+b) (a-b). Yes definitely divisible by (a-b) Take n=1 = a-b . Yes definitely divisible by (a-b) So n can be odd or even. Both Satisfies 1. NS. 2. Take n =1 a^n+ b^n = a+b ; which acc...

I was also confused, however if you think about it, (35^2) - (1/k) will never result in an integer for k>1. In fact it will always be an integer, i.e. 35*35, minus a number smaller than 1, i.e. 1/k.

Therefore it cannot be an integer.
