Letters of Recommendation

by avada » Tue Oct 09, 2012 12:39 pm
I am trying to figure out who my recs should come from. I have my previous boss and one professor good to go.

The problem is my current job. I have worked at a family owned business for 3 years now and my superior is my father. The rest of the people report to me and we dont have anyone outside of the company that would be relevant.
Who do I go to for this rec? Ive heard its really bad to not have a rec from your current employer and it is also bad to use a family member

It's not a question of "Bad". The problem with fathers is that there is no chance that they would write bad recommendation, so the affect of a dad's rec is close to nil. That is why you are better off choosing someone more objective. It's totally okay for you not to have a recommender from your current job if you work for your dad, just make sure you use the optional essay to explain yourself here.

OMG, just read your post and your really ARE in a difficult situation. I was just thinking about what I would do in your position. COuldn't you just ask another employee to write it for you and kind of explain the matter to the commitee?
