IMO E
"before she died" already gives the idea of alteration happened before she died.. so the use of had been is unnecessary..
Thus E.. "was altered"

the extent to which...is correct, so A & E.
A has 'had been altered' which means later the articles were altered again.
E with simple past aptly points to events before her death. So E.
Anywise what is the OA?

The answer as given is A.
In my opinion also, use of "Had been" can be avoided as "before she died" tells the sequence of events.

We need a noun after much disputed question. Hence 'the extent'.
Past perfect tense is required for an event that precedes another event in the past. So, I would go with (A).

so how much fits the bil here
further...there are two tenses involved...she died and the work copied before she died...definetly it requies an had..
