Follow up after MBA interview

by mbjawwad » Mon Aug 18, 2014 2:18 am
I gave an interview on Thursday which went perfect as far as I know. Could anyone please suggest if a "follow up" about the admission is a good idea or just stress out the wait. If I just keep the B-school busy with questions about the program just to gain an idea about how good my chances of enrollment are, would it be fine. How to go about it?

Hello mbajawwad,
Happy you are pleased with your interview and as a former b-school admissions sr associate director, I'll provide some advice for next steps. After the interview it's a good idea to send your interviewer a thank you message (email is fine) and keep it brief but try to add in something personal, either about something you discussed or are interested in, to remind the interviewer of who you are.
In terms of following up, hopefully your interviewer explained when you can expect to hear a response and at this point I suggest you sit back and wait. If the interviewer told you, for example, two to three weeks for a response and if three weeks pass without any news, at that point you can follow up politely, asking if there are any updates on your admissions status. I do not recommend you contact b-school Admissions with questions before then, since they are likely very busy and you don't want to come across as an applicant who is too eager or who becomes a bother to the office. Good luck with everything and hope this advice was helpful!

Thanks Jon and Dina,

The interviewer shared his email and asked me to "feel free" to ask anything about the admissions, and somehow I feel that the expression was to be taken just as a formality and not literally. So a day after the interview I sent a thank you email but pushed in a couple of queries regarding the admissions too. I have not received a response and I have been thinking it might be because of a very generic email subject that I typed in i.e. "MBA fall admission 2014-15 - queries". I know, very stupid of me to choose such a subject. Also, considering the fact that the intake starts in the 3rd week of September, is there a different follow-up approach that you might want to suggest?

Thanks again and regards.

Well, are they on time? I mean, did they give you a deadline for response? If they are over it, then yes go ahead and contact them again. If not, then maybe it would be better to wait a wee bit. Although if school starts in less than a month that's quite near. Where did you apply?
