Reapplication Keystrokes?

by Sul » Sun Mar 31, 2013 1:35 am
Hi,

I just got dinged from the schools that I applied to - Wharton, Columbia, MIT and Booth. While I went till the interview stage for Wharton and Booth with me being on waitlist for Booth, I am just wondering what better I can do to improve my candidature.

Just to give you a brief snapshot of my profile:

Work Experience:
Analytics consultant - Mckinsey and Co (~ 2 years)
Analytics - Tesco (~1 year)

Education Experience:
Masters in Economics (Delhi University) - 3.4 GPA
Bachelor in Technology - 3.5 GPA

GMAT - 700

Extra curricular - Leader at an organisation that teaches autistic children

Have lot of awards at various college events for debates, extempore, business case competitions, case studies, etc

District level swimming champion
Delhi University TT winner
etc

In light of the brief snapshot, could you please tell me what and how shall I go about improving my profile so that I really have an excellent chance of making through?

1 Shall I re-take GMAT? Will notching up couple of points make a huge difference?
2 Shall I switch my job that is closer to my long term goal of being a business consultant (shift from analytics to a more of business consultant domain)
3 Shall I reconsider list of schools that I want to apply to? Though I am fixed on going to top school only
4 Any additional extra curricular that I can do? Shall I venture out more into NGO stuff or take up a foreign language course like German or shall I open a firm that aligns me to my goals or something else?
5 Finally, am I right in re-applying to these schools or the fact that they dinged me once and would not be interested in me again unless I do something extraordinary ( which I can't in like 6 months)?

I would really appreciate your thoughts around this. Thanks in advance for your valuable inputs. Highly appreciate it.

A few extra points always helps, especially for Indian candidates who tend to test higher than US candidates. IF you are planning to reapply to some of the schools, those extra points can be extra helpful, as they show that you have made the effort for improvement and succeeded, and it will be looked upon kindly by the Admissions Committee.

2 Shall I switch my job that is closer to my long term goal of being a business consultant (shift from analytics to a more of business consultant domain) ?

I would say you should make this choice in function of your life and career and not of the MBA. You can always rewrite your goals a bit to make them reflect your career realities. Take the job if it's better for you, but yes consulting is considered a bit stronger.

3 Shall I reconsider list of schools that I want to apply to? Though I am fixed on going to top school only?

I think so. It's okay to limit yourself to top schools, but the results you get should also be something you should learn from. Apply to MORE schools for sure!

4 Any additional extra curricular that I can do? Shall I venture out more into NGO stuff or take up a foreign language course like German or shall I open a firm that aligns me to my goals or something else?

At this point the most useful things that can happen: 1. Get promoted 2. Gain more great achievements 3. Gain more leadership responsibilities (in anything work or else) 4. Deepen your experience in NGO or other activity

5 Finally, am I right in re-applying to these schools or the fact that they dinged me once and would not be interested in me again unless I do something extraordinary ( which I can't in like 6 months)?

If you have no changes you can show at all, there's no point in bothering applying. Even if it is but six months, SOMETHING must have changed! And if not, it is your job to make it change!

Hope this helps!

Hi Jon,

I would like to know more about the post mba goals repositioning with career realities, which you mentioned in the previous response.
1. I am in Heath care consulting and my career goal last year was to start primary health care centers in rural India, but now I'd like to mention that I want to start my own health care consulting company. I have gained some international client site working experience and hope to leverage this experience for the goal repositioning. Does this looks logical?
2. How can one strengthen one's candidature for reapplication?

Regards,

1. Not so much actually. I think that you would be better of with a more traditional "I'm going to get a job in healthcare management" goal. It's far more likely and far more plausible.

2. See my other post to you in this forum :)
