To PrecisionEssay : A Humble Request

by himanshu.barik » Fri Dec 02, 2011 9:27 am
Hi,
I would like to know about the universities where I can apply and have a good chance of getting an Admit. My Profile : -

GMAT : 710 ( 50 q, 36 v)
I have an experience of 2 yrs 6 months as a systems engineer in a top IT services company in India.
Engineering CGPA : 8.43 / 10 from a state university.
XII : 76.4 % CBSE
X : 87.16 % ICSE

Extracurriculars : -

1.I have organized blood donation camps at college & Eco-plantation drives at college and school.

2.I was the student associate of Pre-Placement Cell of my college and also the secretary of the Technical Paper Presentation Club during engineering.

3.I have written, directed and acted in Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice which was a huge hit at school and also participated in similar dramas and plays at college.I had also done a solo dance at college annual fest.

4.During engineering,I helped save a poor friend's life by leading and organizing a fund raising campaign and the quantitative and qualitative achievement is surely awe-inspiring.(I am not gonna disclose the story here but believe me I did turn an almost impossible task into an accomplishable possibility and this was a turning point in the field of work of an NGO).

5.I have competed with people 20 years senior to me and succeeded in national level fine arts courses.I have about 30+ certificates which I have won in debates, essays and painting competitions.

6.I was awarded the Best outgoing student of the year in class XII for representing and winning for the school at national level events, organizing cultural fests, etc.I was my school prefect and secretary of Cultural Club during the same period.I have also played a pioneering role by participating & changing the way my school looked at ECs and motivated my juniors for participating actively in the same.

7.I have tutored kindergarten kids with painting classes during class XII.I have also taught SQL to engineering students at a private institute during 3rd year of engg.

8.I am also an active member of Toastmasters Club and part of its executive committee.

Please suggest me the list of universities which I should target and which should also be suitable for me,given my IT background.I guess consulting might be ok for me but I am not sure what other scope or prospects I may have. Please Advise on this as well.

Yes,People do an MBA for hefty pay packages post MBA and I am no exception.I would like to get into the schools with maximum possible salary offers and 100% placement records.I might not be interested in some universities in which the salary post MBA would be below 1 lac USD....I know I sound silly because I not yet aware of where opportunities are available and where they can lead me to....I do apologize.

Regards,
Himanshu.

Himanshu,
Thanks for asking us. Look, your profile is good. You have a lot of nice things, and really what is most appealing is that it seems "full" and "mature". A disadvantage that we see so often with candidates from a similar background as you, is that they have little more than their career, but you do, and it's great. And this is what you gotta work on. Yes, show success, academic, professional and otherwise. But be more than a "achievement machine", be a PERSON, show them who you ARE, and I think you will have good chances.

As for school choice, first of all, there is no school in the world that has 100% placement, not even Harvard. Cause people do what they do after school, and stuff happens. But you are definitely right for checking out those employment stats. And there are a TON of good schools out there. You can start looking into: Haas, Sloan, Stanford (your fine arts background here can really enrich your story), Columbia, Tepper, Anderson. This is where I would start having a look (the list isn't exclusive, but some suggestions). Maybe looking at Austin too (great employment stats there). and your goals don;t sound silly at all. you need to do this MBA degree the way it fits YOU and your dreams.

Hi Jon,
Thanks a ton for your encouraging words!
You have certainly raised my spirits and my expectations because I had never even thought in my dreams that I might even target schools like Sloan or Stanford! Honestly,I have absolutely no concrete idea about these schools except that these are the best in the world. The reason for this is, four months back I did not even know I would be taking the GMAT as my father had met with an serious accident 2 years back and till July this year, he had to undergo a series of 8 major surgeries, resulting in the amputation of one of his legs. Being the only child, I had to sail my family all through this turmoil of events and only 4 months back, I was able to kinda unburden myself and concentrate on other things in life, the first one being GMAT. So,its very inspiring for me as I read through your reply to my request.

Please suggest, how should I proceed from here. Whom should I consult to show me the right direction and what other areas should I focus on?

And as far as the placements are concerned, I am not too stringent on 100% as I know that even if I get into a good B-School, I will have to strive hard and be in the top 50% of the class to get a good job.

Can I take your help?
If yes, please advise how to proceed.

Best Regards,
Himanshu.
