Please verify that the question and choices are correct. Taking the post as is, choice D cannot be correct. Reason - two independent clauses cannot be joined by a comma. A semicolon is needed to join 2 independent clauses in this case. Choice E would more likely be the answer.

Even I feel E should be the answer.D makes the second clause completely independent in meaning but without a sentence connector.
