Hello Tanuj,

Thank you for your post!

Before applying for an MBA, there are a few factors you'll want to consider.

It looks like you may have some brand strength to underscore your professional achievements; however, it would be great to learn what you have accomplished in research and development. Clearly you've been successful based on your two promotions, but the adcoms will be looking for the details that led to those promotions. You'll want to bring out your leadership actions. You could highlight your role as a mentor to support your communication skills; however, the adcom will be looking for a sense of your impact in your main role as well. The average MBA applicant is 28 to 29 years of age and has amassed 4-6 years of work experience. So, another year spent cultivating leadership experience and quantifiable impact could enhance your candidacy.

Additionally, coming from India, many of your fellow country men and women with similar academic histories (if not professional experiences) are also targeting top programs, and that makes it even more difficult to truly stand out or differentiate yourself. Given the importance of international experience, overall, you'll want to seize opportunities to "expand your borders" as well as demonstrate your personal passions in your community. You have a healthy amount of community involvement in college, but it would be great to get involved now and demonstrate your leadership further.

In regards to your goals, I'm unclear on whether you want to pursue investment banking, consulting or consulting with a focus on finance. You should go further than just noting an industry, but instead identify specific positions you would like to hold, a few target firms and the impact you wish to have in your career. Given your long-term interest in social entrepreneurship, it would be ideal to have some evidence of your passion for this. For instance, getting involved in a venture in your spare time or starting a new initiative within the organization's CSR initiative. Overall, you need richer details for your goals to craft effective applications.

Your GMAT score will help you be competitive; however, you need more evidence of quantified impact as well as direct leadership experience to really stand out. Given your age, you could use the next year to address and improve these areas.

Thanks Eliot@Clear Admit for your valuable insights.

I did a bit of research regarding my goals as that was the area which was raising the flag.

IB is out of the list now, I would like to focus on Marketing/Strategy Consulting or Brand/Product Management once I get admitted. I feel these tracks would be helpful in pursuing my ultimate goal of becoming an entrepreneur. But since, Consulting is what almost all Indian applicants want to do Post-MBA, I am afraid , I wont be able to stand out in terms of goals.

PE/VC was another area I did a bit of research in (FYI : just because of the dynamic nature of the job and not for the money) and as it turns out, these are extremely hard jobs to get even with a Finance background, so AdComs would need a lot of convincing from my end about my eligibility, seriousness etc. to pursue this track.

Baseline is that I want to switch my career from IT as I have realized after two years in the field that I am passionate about Business. I typically want a job(for short term), that is more dynamic in nature. And I want to use my MBA experience to really explore all the opportunities there are in the Business field. And isn't the whole point of an MBA experience to explore, expand and develop a new understanding and awareness of one's abilities and passions?

Please suggest if Product Management if unique enough a goal for the AdComs or if you could suggest me some valid tracks which will make me stand out in the application process, I would really be grateful.

Thanks in advance!
