Hi Sir,
I really have to put down this doubt that's been clicking me for quite sometime.
The indian system of grading primarily invokes representation of the academic marks in score of 10, while the US GPA equivalent is on a maximum score of 4. I've been told about the WES conversion system which helps us in finding out our US equivalents.
My point is regarding how and what, the US Universities look into while calculating an equivalent for our score. Is it the class rank, class average or the school reputation or the highest GPA obtained by candidates throughout the years in the particular department we are from. Incase it is so, how does the Universities generate such a large database given the fact that most of the universities in India do not furnish such details in the transcripts they provide. Just as a representation, how would the GPA of student look in his US Equivalent if his GPA were to stand equal to the class average.( say maybe 7.0 GPA on 10 point basis)
I was hoping on your opinion based on your experience in this matter.

It's a good question.
the first thing schools will do is look at your SCHOOL. In many ways your school is more important than your grades, especially in India. So a 6 at IIT might be better than a 9 anywhere else. Secondly, schools will look at your grades RELATIVE to others in your school. Some folks come from schools where the highest grade is a 7.5 and some where the highest is a 9.5 Important! - Schools will NOT always know this, so if your school grades particularly tough you need to provide this information in the way of FACTS about grading (i.e. I am at 60%, but am in the top 2% of 10,000 students).
The WES stuff is useful for you to roughly evaluate whereabout you stand but in general the schools will not convert your grades before evaluating you, but evaluate you within your own applicant pool (i.e. India).
Hope this makes sense and helps,
