Hi all,

I'm contemplating applying to business school. Currently a senior software engineer for a well-known technology company, with people reporting to me.

Early on in life, I was diagnosed with mild autism/ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) which has always affected my academic and social performance to some degree. Nothing too severe, like 'Rain Man' but enough to be classified and diagnosed as a disability.

Should I highlight or even mention this in my application? In the eyes of the admissions committee, would it be a plus (overcoming a handicap) or would it be a minus (possible worries about not being able to deal with the coursework)

BTW, my overall undergrad GPA was around 3.3, not the best of course but it was at a top 10 private school. It was a bit higher in my major (math/computer science). Haven't taken GMAT yet.

Thanks for any advice!

Dear DLH:

That is a tough one as it can work both for and against you depending on the biases of the admissions committee. Personally, I do not know that I would disclose it if you feel it will not affect your performance in school (i.e., classroom discussions, teamwork, exams, papers, etc.). However if you do feel it will affect your coursework or will impact your GMAT score, then it is probably worth disclosing. Based on your 3.3 GPA in engineering from a good school, I would not say it had a large, negative impact on your undergraduate record.

Best of luck to you,
Lisa
